Far too often, we see the headline – “The manufacturing industry is currently facing a shortage of skilled workers.” Local Golden Corridor high schools have listened and have shifted “gears.” Previously they promoted college as the way to a rewarding career. Now, we see a shift to provide alternative career pathway options like Advanced Manufacturing. In most cases, Advanced Manufacturing does not require a bachelor's degree.
Apprenticeships have become an answer to many manufacturing companies struggling to fill positions. Most apprentices commit to an employer for three to five years. Long-term this results in on-the-job-training coupled with some classroom related instruction.
Local apprenticeship programs are housed at many of our local community colleges. Additionally, trade associations like TMA, as well as the German American Chamber of Commerce serve to support the success of these programs . We encourage manufacturers to partner these types of organizations to train and develop young adults.
Leveraging the next generation workforce is a viable solution to the worker shortage. Yet, it’s only being utilized in a small percentage of area manufacturing companies. Enter the Golden Corridor Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (GCAMP).
The not-for-profit introduced manufacturers to the next generation workforce at its semi-annual Manufacturers Breakfast, to show them how many of today’s students are highly skilled, capable and willing to forge careers in manufacturing.
